about us

Three Birch Gardens is where Swiss design meets Hudson Valley sensibilities. Co-founders Anne-Marguerite Kiriacescu, Max Buckland and Liz Thompson met while studying at the New York Botanical Garden.  These three graduates of The School of Professional Horticulture discovered a shared passion for creating refined gardens with structural integrity, making them a natural fit.  They take great pride in practicing community-oriented horticulture, building meaningful relationships, and designing unique spaces.

Anne-Marguerite Kiriacescu

Anne-Marguerite moved to New York from Switzerland after falling in love with the city.  No matter the venue, she brings a sharp eye for detail and a commitment to precision. Anne-ma combines her background in psychology and classics to create therapeutic spaces with Old World charm where people can heal and reconnect with nature.  Anne-Marguerite can be found enjoying a fondue with friends and family after a day in the garden.

Max Buckland

Max was born and raised in the Hudson River Valley.  After living abroad, he returned home to where the grass truly is greener. He believes the outdoors to be the best classroom, and the plants he works with the best teachers. Max has a keen eye for balance and proportion, bringing out the best self of any shrub, tree, or garden. He gives back to the land he loves so much by designing gardens that pay homage to the Hudson River Valley.  Max can be found enjoying a beer on his porch and tending to his bonsai after a day in the garden.

Elizabeth Thompson

Liz grew up among the canopy roads and freshwater springs of North Florida.  She has learned to appreciate the winter here -- mainly because it makes it possible to grow gorgeous bulbs and spring ephemerals.  She brings a detail-oriented, interdisciplinary approach to the garden, drawing on her background in environmental science, floral design, and horticulture.  When not in the garden or greenhouse, Liz is happiest when taking a swim in one of the valley's beautiful lakes.
